Her Pen Is Her Power: Vanzforthefanz Writes Her Rise in Montreal R&B
Writen by Mouna Ougadi
Montreal’s rising R&B voice Vanzforthefanz is carving her own lane with honesty, evolution, and intention. Raised in a home filled with diverse sounds, her earliest influences ranged from Bob Marley to Mariah Carey, with albums by Brandy, Monica and Coolio playing at home. The first album her father bought her was Goodies by Ciara—a defining moment that planted the seed for her own artistry.
Today, her writing is deeply inspired by SZA, Kehlani and Solange Knowles, while her sonic vibe draws from Normani and Teyana Taylor. For her, the magic lies in building the “skeleton” of a song—crafting melodies and finding the right words. She embraces trial and error, knowing that every instrumental holds endless melodic possibilities; the real challenge is choosing the one that feels right.
After a three- to four-year pause, she returns with “No Good” alongside Kyiliah and plans to release four to five singles this year. Having evolved both personally and artistically, she is ready to reintroduce herself—this time fully aligned with the woman and songwriter she has become shaping the future of R&B in the city.
